The most
popular franchise of women’s cricket T20 tournaments – Women’s Big Bash League
(WBBL) is returning with its 12th season. The 12th season
of WBBL will start on October 29, 2026 and the final match will be played on December
5, 2026. According to Cricket Australia’s official schedule, this time the
tournament will be compact and teams have to play important matches in a short
period of time.
In the last
season of WBBL Hobart Hurricanes won their first title. Now everyone is waiting
to see if Hurricanes can retain their trophy or anyother team will stop their winning
run.
When Will
WBBL I 12 Start?
WBBL I 12
will start on October 29, 2026 from Oval in Melbourne. The fans will get to see
a special double-header on the opening day. In the first match Melbourne
Renegades will face Sydney Thunder. After that Melbourne stars will play
against the defending champions Hobart Hurricanes.
Which Teams Will Play in WBBL|12?
A total of eight teams will compete in this season of the
WBBL.
They are:
- Adelaide
Strikers
- Brisbane
Heat
- Hobart
Hurricanes
- Melbourne
Renegades
- Melbourne
Stars
- Perth
Scorchers
- Sydney
Sixers
- Sydney
Thunder
All eight teams have a mix of experienced Australian players
and international stars. This is one of the main reasons why the WBBL is
usually such a competitive tournament.
Hobart Hurricanes Have a Big Challenge Ahead
Hobart Hurricanes will start the season as the defending
champions.
The team won its first WBBL title in WBBL|11, so there will
naturally be a lot of expectations around them this time.
However, the Hurricanes will not have exactly the same squad
that won the trophy last season.
Captain Elyse Villani has retired from the competition,
while England all-rounder Natalie Sciver-Brunt will not play for the
Hurricanes in WBBL|12.
The good news for Hobart is that some important members of
their title-winning team are still around. Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Linsey Smith
and Lizelle Lee are among the players who can play an important role this
season.
The question is whether the Hurricanes can adjust quickly
and continue their winning run despite the changes.
Big International Names Return
The WBBL has always been a great place to watch
international cricket stars, and this season is no different.
The Adelaide Strikers have England spinner Sophie
Ecclestone and South African batter Laura Wolvaardt in their squad.
Ecclestone will be playing another season with the Strikers.
The Perth Scorchers also have plenty of experience.
Their squad includes Australian stars Beth Mooney and Alana King,
along with New Zealand's Sophie Devine. Pakistan captain Fatima Sana
will also be part of the Scorchers squad.
The Sydney Sixers have one of the most talked-about
groups of players. Their squad includes Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner,
Amelia Kerr, Alice Capsey and Sophia Dunkley.
However, the Sixers will have to manage life without Alyssa
Healy, who has retired. Her absence leaves a big hole in the team.
For the Sydney Thunder, England's experienced player Heather
Knight will once again be an important part of the squad. Her experience
could be especially useful for the younger players in the team.
Will Indian Players Feature in WBBL|12?
Indian fans will also be keeping an eye on the tournament.
The WBBL has become an important competition for women's
cricket, and Indian players have also attracted plenty of attention in overseas
leagues.
One name linked with WBBL|12 is Jemimah Rodrigues.
She has been listed among Brisbane Heat's uncontracted players. Cricket
Australia has also indicated that Heat are not expecting her to return this
season.
Rodrigues is currently recovering from an injury as well.
Because of this, the exact picture regarding Indian
participation will become clearer once all player availability and squad
details are confirmed.
A New System for Overseas Players
There is a major change in the way overseas players will be
picked this season.
The overseas player draft has been removed. WBBL
teams can now sign overseas players directly.
The rule that required teams to sign a minimum number of
overseas players has also been removed.
This gives the franchises more freedom when building their
squads. Instead of following the earlier system, teams can now decide what kind
of international players they actually need.
It could also make squad planning more interesting because
every team will have more control over its overseas signings.
Melbourne to Host an Exciting Opening Day
Melbourne cricket fans will have plenty to look forward to
on the first day of the tournament.
Junction Oval will host an evening WBBL match under
lights on the opening day. The Melbourne Stars will face Hobart Hurricanes
in what should be one of the early highlights of the season.
The Melbourne rivalry will also continue during WBBL|12.
The Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades will
compete for the Melbourne Mace, adding another interesting element to their
matches.
Local rivalries have always added extra excitement to the
WBBL, and this one should be no different.
Can Hobart Win the Trophy Again?
Hobart Hurricanes have already shown that they can win the
WBBL title. Now they have to prove that they can do it again.
That will not be easy.
The team has lost some important experience after Villani's
retirement and Sciver-Brunt's absence. Replacing their contribution will be a
major task.
But Hobart are not the only team with a chance.
The Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers
all have strong squads. Other teams could also challenge for the title if their
key players perform at the right time.
This makes the upcoming season difficult to predict.
Why WBBL Is Important for Women's Cricket
The WBBL is not just another T20 tournament.
It gives young Australian players a chance to play alongside
some of the best cricketers in the world. They can learn from experienced
international players while also getting used to playing in pressure
situations.
The competition is also useful for overseas players.
Cricketers from different countries get the chance to play together, which
helps women's T20 cricket continue to grow around the world.
WBBL|12 will once again bring together this mix of young
talent and international experience.
Final Word
WBBL|12 will begin on October 29, 2026, and the
tournament will end with the final on December 5.
The opening day will feature Melbourne Renegades vs
Sydney Thunder followed by Melbourne Stars vs Hobart Hurricanes.
Hobart Hurricanes will have the pressure of defending their
first-ever WBBL title, but the changes in their squad could make the challenge
much harder.
Teams like the Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and
Adelaide Strikers will also have their eyes on the trophy.
With several big names, a new overseas signing system and
some exciting rivalries, WBBL|12 looks set to be another interesting season
of women's T20 cricket.
