Rajinikanth is back in the news for a big reason. His latest film, Jailer 2, has become the highest-grossing Tamil film worldwide. The action drama crossed the ₹700 crore mark within 11 days of its release and broke the record held by another Rajinikanth film, 2.0.

The film has received a strong response from audiences in India and overseas. Its success has also created a new milestone for Tamil cinema.

Jailer 2 Crosses ₹700 Crore at the Box Office

According to NDTV’s box office report, Jailer 2 collected around ₹733.35 crore worldwide in its first 12 days, based on Sacnilk estimates.

The film crossed ₹700 crore on October 25, 2026. It became the first Tamil film to reach this mark at the worldwide box office.

The collection includes earnings from India and international markets. The film was released in theatres on October 15 and continued to attract audiences during its second week.

Box office figures are estimates and may change as new numbers become available.

Jailer 2 Beats Rajinikanth’s 2.0

Before Jailer 2, Rajinikanth’s 2.0 held the record for the highest-grossing Tamil film worldwide. Released in 2018, the science fiction film also featured Akshay Kumar.

According to trade estimates, 2.0 earned around ₹691 crore worldwide during its theatrical run.

Jailer 2 has now moved ahead of that figure. This means Rajinikanth has starred in both films that held the worldwide box office record for Tamil cinema.

The success also puts Jailer 2 ahead of popular Tamil films such as Leo and the first Jailer in reported worldwide collections.

How Rajinikanth Agreed to Make Jailer 2

Jailer 2 was not always part of the plan. Rajinikanth has explained that he was not keen on making sequels to his earlier films.

In an interview covered by NDTV, the actor shared how the idea for the sequel developed.

After watching Jailer again on OTT, Rajinikanth felt that the ending had room for another story. In the first film, the villain Varman warns Tiger Muthuvel Pandian about a larger network of enemies. The film also shows containers carrying goods worth ₹1,000 crore.

Rajinikanth felt these details could lead to a bigger story.

Director Nelson Dilipkumar initially felt that they had already used most of the story ideas in the first film. However, he thought about the proposal for a month and later developed the idea further.

Nelson then worked on the script while Rajinikanth was busy with his other films.

Rajinikanth Returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian

In Jailer 2, Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer from the first film.

The sequel brings back familiar faces, including Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa. It also features actors such as S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and Suraj Venjaramoodu.

The film is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music.

The combination of Rajinikanth’s screen presence, action scenes and returning characters has helped the sequel attract attention from fans.

What Makes Jailer 2’s Success Important?

Crossing ₹700 crore worldwide is a major achievement for a Tamil film. Jailer 2 has also shown that a popular regional film can attract audiences across different markets.

Its performance gives Tamil cinema a new box office benchmark. The film's journey is also another big moment in Rajinikanth’s long career.

With its worldwide collection continuing to grow, audiences will be watching closely to see how much further Jailer 2 can go.

For now, the film has already secured its place in Tamil cinema history.
