Some names are not just names they become an inspiring story.
Abhinandan Varthaman is also such a name that become a story.
In the year 2019, the tensions between India and Pakistan were at its peak. There were fighter jets in the air and among them joined with his MiG-21 Bison was Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman.
His aircraft was hit and he was forced to eject the craft. He landed in the Pakistan territory and was captured by the Pakistani forces. But during captivity his calm attitude was the main topic of discussion all over India.People were impressed by his confidence and composed nature. After a long 60 hours of captivity he retuned back in India on 1st March 2019.
A fighter pilot was retuned to his homeland but that was not the end of his story.
Seven Years Later Everything Changed
After returning to India Abhinandan continued his military service.
He rose to the rank rank of Group Captain and 22 years of his military service he surprisingly decided to leave the force.
On March 31st 2026 he took a premature retirement from IAF.
So the question is what he is doing right now?
He is flying.
Just not fighter jets.
From MiG to Passenger Aircarft
After his retirement from IAF Abhinandan never really retired from flying in the sky.HE took a turn to commercial aviation.
August 2026 he joined FLY91, a Goa based regional airline as a commercial pilot. Now he is getting the training of ATR 72-600 passenger aircraft.
Just think once his cockpit was carrying the mission of keeping the country’s airspace safe now his mission is to make the passengers reach their destination safely.
Aircarft changed.
Uniform Changed.
Even the Mission took a turn but he never really changed the sky.
A New Chapter, Not the End.
A real life hero who moved on in his own story.
The most beautiful part of Abhinandan’s story is that he is not stuck in his past incident.
The country still remembers him as a fighter pilot but his journey is much nigger than that one incident.
The journey from a fighter to a group captain and then retirement from military service and now a new beginning in commercial aviation.
He wrote every chapter of his story with his own hands.
Now he is training for ATR 72-600 in Goa and after completion of his training and required clearences he operate regional passenger flights.
Destination is New but Pilot remains the same.
The story of Abhinandan Varthaman reminds us of one simple thing.
Heroes are not made in one moment they remain a hero after they continue their journey.
The most beautiful thing I can say about his story is-
He never left the sky, He just changed the aircraft.
