There was a time when an India ODI meant one thing for millions of fans: make sure you get a seat.
Now, with T20 cricket taking up so much of the calendar, there has been plenty of discussion about the future of 50-over cricket.
Kerala, however, has just given ODI cricket an interesting moment.
Tickets for the India vs West Indies first ODI at Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram sold out within 24 hours of going on sale. The Kerala Cricket Association said the tickets were snapped up faster than at previous matches at the venue.
And there is another reason this match feels different.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back together in India’s ODI team.
The two former India captains are part of the squad for the three-match series against West Indies, with Shubman Gill leading the side. The first ODI will be played in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27.
The BCCI's official squad announcement confirms that both Rohit and Kohli have been selected for the ODI series.
For Kerala, this is more than just another India ODI.
It is a Ro-Ko reunion.
The Last Ro-Ko ODI in Kerala
The last time Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli played an ODI together at Greenfield Stadium was on November 1, 2018.
The opponent was also West Indies.
India made short work of the chase after West Indies were bowled out for 104. Rohit finished unbeaten on 63, while Kohli remained unbeaten on 33 as India reached 105/1 in only 14.5 overs.
India won the match by nine wickets.
Almost eight years later, the same venue will see the pair together again in an ODI.
That gives the Kerala match a nice piece of cricketing history.
The players are older. The captain is different. The team around them has changed.
But the opponent and the venue bring back a familiar memory.
When Did Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Last Play an ODI Together?
The Kerala game is not their first ODI together after a long break.
Their most recent ODI together came much more recently, during India’s 2026 tour of England.
In the third ODI at Lord’s on July 19, Rohit produced a brilliant 138, while Kohli scored 74. Shubman Gill also made 77.
India scored 360/7 in reply to England’s 387/3 but lost by 27 runs. England won the three-match series 2-1.
So, the Kerala match is better described as a venue-specific Ro-Ko reunion, rather than a reunion after a long absence from ODI cricket.
And that distinction matters.
Fans in Kerala have not had to wait years to see them play together again.
They have, however, waited years to see an ODI featuring the pair at this particular venue.
Why Are Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Playing Only ODIs?
The reason is simple: both players have stepped away from the other two international formats.
Rohit retired from Test cricket in May 2025 and said he would continue playing ODIs. The BCCI confirmed that he would remain part of India’s ODI campaigns.
Kohli also retired from Test cricket in May 2025. The ICC confirmed that he had already retired from T20Is in 2024 following India’s T20 World Cup victory.
Both players had announced their T20I retirements after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup.
That leaves ODI cricket as their only international format.
This changes the way fans look at their appearances.
Every ODI now carries a little more attention because these are the games in which Indian fans can still watch both players in international cricket.
Why Are Rohit and Kohli Still Important to India’s ODI Team?
The current Indian team is entering a different phase.
Shubman Gill is now the ODI captain. KL Rahul is the vice-captain. Around them is a mix of established players and younger names.
Rohit and Kohli bring something different: years of international experience and a huge amount of ODI cricket behind them.
Their presence also gives the new leadership group two senior batters who have already played major international tournaments.
The current BCCI squad announcement lists both Rohit and Kohli alongside Gill, Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and other members of India’s ODI setup.
The ICC has also described the West Indies series as part of India’s preparation for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
Kohli has separately said he remains committed to playing at the 2027 World Cup, if he is still playing. The ICC reported his comments in May 2026.
That makes the current ODI phase particularly interesting.
It is not the old India team coming back.
It is a new India team with two familiar stars still involved.
Why Did Kerala Tickets Sell Out So Quickly?
This is where the Ro-Ko factor becomes difficult to ignore.
The Kerala Cricket Association said tickets for the September 27 ODI sold out within 24 hours of online sales opening.
According to KCA secretary Vinod S Kumar, previous matches at the venue had also sold out, but usually within around 24 to 26 hours. This time, the tickets went faster.
He said the presence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could be one of the reasons for the quicker demand.
That wording is important.
It would be too strong to say Rohit and Kohli alone caused the sell-out.
There are several factors.
Kerala has waited several years for an ODI. T20 matches are more frequent at the venue, while ODIs are distributed among different grounds on a rotation basis, according to the KCA.
So the demand is not only about two players.
It is about an India ODI returning to the state, an international opponent, a full-day cricket experience and, of course, two of India’s biggest names being part of the squad.
Together, those factors have created a very different level of excitement.
Is ODI Cricket Really Losing Its Pull?
That is the bigger question hiding behind the Kerala sell-out.
T20 cricket is faster. It fits easily into an evening. It has become a major part of the international and franchise calendar.
Because of that, ODI cricket is sometimes discussed as a format struggling to hold the same attention.
But a sold-out stadium does not tell the entire story of global ODI cricket either.
What it does show is that the format can still create major demand when the right ingredients come together.
In Thiruvananthapuram, those ingredients are clear.
An India ODI.
A rare visit to Kerala.
West Indies as the opponent.
And Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli walking back into the same ODI XI.
That combination has clearly caught the imagination of fans.
What Comes Next for Rohit and Kohli?
The West Indies series has three ODIs.
According to the BCCI's official schedule:
- September 27: India vs West Indies, Thiruvananthapuram
- September 30: India vs West Indies, Guwahati
- October 3: India vs West Indies, New Chandigarh
The series will then move into five T20Is, but Rohit and Kohli are not part of India’s T20I squad.
The ODI series is also an important part of India’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup. The ICC has confirmed that Gill will lead India as the team builds towards the tournament.
For Rohit and Kohli, the immediate job is therefore clear.
Play ODIs.
Score runs.
Help the team.
And continue to be part of India’s plans for the 50-over format.
What happens beyond that will depend on future selection and the players’ own decisions. There is no need to turn every match into a retirement farewell before it happens.
The Kerala Reunion
Back in November 2018, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stood together at the same ground against the same opponent.
Rohit scored 63 not out.
Kohli scored 33 not out.
India won by nine wickets.
Nearly eight years later, they are returning to the same venue for another India-West Indies ODI.
But almost everything else has changed.
Gill is now the captain.
Rohit and Kohli are no longer playing Tests or T20Is.
The Indian team is preparing for another World Cup cycle.
And Kerala has shown that there is still a strong appetite for an India ODI.
The tickets disappeared within 24 hours.
Now the fans get what they were waiting for.
Ro-Ko are back in Kerala.
And for one Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram, the conversation around ODI cricket will not be about whether the format is fading.
It will be about two familiar names walking out together again.
