Prime Minister Narendra Modi could be travelling to
the United States in December for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in Florida.
According to recent reports, preparations are underway for Modi to attend the
summit, which will be hosted by US President Donald Trump. If the visit goes
ahead, Modi and Trump could also hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of
the G20 Summit. However, there is an important point to keep in mind: the
Indian government has not officially announced PM Modi’s December US visit yet.
So, for now, the trip and the proposed Modi-Trump meeting should be treated as
expected or possible engagements rather than confirmed events.
When and Where Will the G20 Summit Take Place?
The 2026 G20 Leaders’ Summit is scheduled for December
14 and 15, 2026, at the Trump National Doral Miami in Florida. The United
States is hosting the G20 this year, with President Donald Trump set to host
the leaders’ summit. US government sources have confirmed the December 14–15
schedule and venue. The G20 brings together major economies to discuss issues
such as global economic growth, trade, investment, energy, technology and other
international challenges. For India, the summit could also become an important
opportunity for talks with the US and other major economies.
Modi-Trump Meeting Could Be on the Cards
If PM Modi travels to Florida, a meeting with
Donald Trump could take place on the sidelines of the summit. Reports based on
people familiar with the preparations suggest that a bilateral meeting is being
considered. The Indian government, however, has not formally confirmed either
the US visit or the meeting with Trump. The two leaders last held a reported
meeting in June 2026 in Évian-les-Bains, France, on the sidelines of the
G7 Summit. Trade and wider India-US cooperation were among the issues
discussed. Trump also publicly referred to ongoing trade discussions with India
during his remarks around that meeting. So, if another Modi-Trump meeting
happens in December, there could be several existing issues for the two sides
to take forward.
Trade Could Be a Big Talking Point
Trade is likely to remain one of the important
issues in any future India-US discussion. The two countries have been working
on their broader trade relationship, while disagreements over tariffs and
India’s purchases of Russian crude have added another layer to the talks. A
recent Reuters report said proposed US legislation could allow tariffs of up to
100% on countries buying significant quantities of Russian oil. India is
one of the major buyers of Russian crude, making the issue particularly
important for New Delhi and Washington. Because of this, trade negotiations,
tariffs and energy security could all become part of the conversation if Modi
and Trump meet in December.
Defence, Energy and Technology
Trade is not the only area where India and the US
are engaged. The two countries have also been expanding cooperation in areas
such as defence, technology, energy and critical minerals. These subjects have
featured in the broader India-US relationship and could again come up during
high-level talks. Technology and critical minerals have become especially
important as countries look to strengthen supply chains and reduce dependence
on limited sources. Energy could also be a sensitive topic because of the
continuing discussion around India’s Russian oil imports and Washington’s
position on them.
Is a Quad Meeting Also Possible?
There are also reports that a Quad leaders’
meeting could take place around the G20 Summit. The Quad consists of India,
the United States, Japan and Australia. The four countries regularly
discuss areas including security, technology, critical minerals, disaster
response and regional cooperation. Reports suggest that preparations for a
possible Quad-level meeting are underway. However, just like Modi’s US trip,
the Quad meeting should also not be treated as officially confirmed until the
relevant governments announce the details.
Why the Possible Visit Matters
The possible December visit comes at an important
point in India-US relations. Both countries are dealing with several major
areas at the same time — trade, tariffs, defence, technology, energy and
strategic cooperation. A meeting between Modi and Trump, if scheduled, would
give the two leaders another opportunity to discuss these issues directly. The
G20 setting would also allow India to engage with several other world leaders
during the same visit. For India, the summit could therefore be more than just
another international gathering. It could become an important diplomatic window
for discussions on trade and wider strategic cooperation.
PM Modi Could Also Travel to Canada
The possible US trip may not be the only
international engagement on Modi’s December schedule. Reports indicate that
Modi could also travel to Canada around the G20 period. India and Canada are
currently working on negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership
Agreement (CEPA).Business Standard reported that Modi’s possible December
engagements could include Canada and Brussels as India works towards trade
agreements with Canada and the European Union. However, the detailed itinerary
has not yet been officially announced by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also indicated that he expects to host
Modi in Canada in December, adding more weight to reports of a possible visit.
No Official Confirmation Yet
For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: PM
Modi’s December US visit has been reported, but it has not yet been formally
confirmed by the Indian government. The same applies to the possible
Modi-Trump bilateral meeting and the reported Quad gathering. These are based
on preparations and reports from people familiar with the plans. What is
confirmed is that the 2026 G20 Leaders’ Summit will be held on December
14–15 at Trump National Doral Miami in Florida. If Modi does attend, the
summit could bring several important conversations to the table — from India-US
trade and tariffs to energy, defence, technology and critical minerals. For
now, the December trip remains something to watch, with the official itinerary
expected to become clearer as the summit gets closer.
