India has created a historic
moment in archery at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi- Nagoya, Japan. The Indian
women's recurve team defeated South Korea 5 - 3 in a tense gold medal final to
win the country's first- ever Asian games gold in the women's team recurve event. The Indian
team featured *Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod*.
Despite strong competition and difficult windy conditions, the trio stayed calm
when it mattered most and managed to overcome one of the strongest teams in
world archery.
A Close Start Between India and South Korea
The final at Okazaki Chuo Sogo
Park Multipurpose Square was closely fought from the beginning. India and South
Korea finished the first set with identical scores of 54, leaving both teams
with one point each. The second set was just as competitive. Both sides scored
56, meaning the match remained level at 2-2. With neither team able to create a
clear gap, the pressure continued to build with every arrow. India finally
found the breakthrough in the third set. South Korea struggled with its final
three arrow, while India finished strongly. Kirti Sharma, Ankita Bhakat and
Kumkum Mohod combined for a score of 55, giving India the set and putting the
team ahead 4-2.
With just one more set point
needed for gold, the final entered in the most tensed stage.
Kumkum Mohod Holds Her Nerve
The fourth set once again went
down to the final arrows. South Korea finished with 54 points, while India also
reached 54 after a crucial scoring decision involving Kirti Sharma’s opening arrow.
The arrow was initially judged as an 8 but was later ruled a 9 after officials
reviewed it. That changed the final score and gave India the tied set it needed
to reach five points and win the gold medal. Kumkum Mohod also played a major
role throughout the final. The 17-year-old repeatedly delivered 10s under
pressure, including the final arrow that helped India close out the contest.
Her calm performance became one of the biggest talking points of India's
historic victory.
South Korea's
Long Reign Comes to an end
India's victory was significant
not only because of the gold medal but also because of its opponent. South
Korea had won the women's team recurve gold at every Asian Games since 1998.
India's 5-3 victory therefore ended a long-standing Korean winning run in the event.
The Korean team of **Lee Yun-ji, Kang Chae-young and Oh Ye-jin** had entered the final with the strong record, but India managed
to keep the match close and take advantage of those crucial moments.
The journey of Final's was very interesting
Reaching
the final was not the only historic moment for India. Before the final, India’s
women’s recurve team also defeated China 5-1 in the semifinal and secured their
place in the Asian Games women’s recurve team final for the first time. Ankita
Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod stayed focused under pressure
and gave their best when it mattered the most. This victory also gave the team
the confidence to take on another strong opponent, South Korea, in the final.
India's
Historic Gold
The 5-3 victory over South Korea
will be remembered as one of the biggest moments for Indian archery at the
Asian Games. It was a final filled with pressure, changing conditions and very
little room for mistakes. But **Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and
Kumkum Mohod** kept their
focus and finished the job. India now has its **maiden Asian
Games gold in women’s team recurve archery**, while South Korea’s long-standing dominance in the event has
finally been broken. For Indian archery, the victory is not just another medal
— it marks a new milestone on the Asian Games stage.
