India has secured the first gold medal in Asian Games 2026, and this gold is won by the women’s cricket team after defeating Sri Lanka in the finals. This final was also important for Team India because they were the defending champions for this year Asian Games. India won a gold medal in the last edition also and defended the title this year in Japan.
India’s
Batting Creates History
In the
finals India won the toss and chose to bat first. They scored a massive target
of 216/3. This was the highest total of Asian Games women’s cricket in history.
The biggest highlight of India’s batting was Smriti Mandhana. She not only
played a brilliant innings of 79 runs but also achieved another milestone in
her international cricket journey. Shafali Verma also gave an aggressive start
and provided a strong position in the powerplay. They made a partnership of 99

Smriti
Mandhana’s Brilliancy
Smriti
Mandhana played an aggressive cricket from the first ball and played an inning
of 79 runs. We saw a lot of boundaries and sixes in her innings and she created
pressure on the bowling attack of Sri Lanka from the very first ball.
There was
another big highlight for the innings played by Smriti Mandhana as she
completed her milestone of 11,000 international runs. According to reports, she
is the first women’s cricketer to get this achievement.
Richa Ghosh
Gives India a Powerful Finish
Richa Ghosh gave
a finishing touch to India’s innings as she scored 49 runs in just 22 balls.
Her powerful hitting in the final overs helped India to achieve the massive
target of 216 against Sri Lanka. The innings played by her proved that India
has an aggressive middle order batters along with the openers thus making it a
balanced batting lineup.
Sri Lanka’s
Chase Falls Apart
The Sri Lanka
women’s team entered the ground to chase a massive target of 216 but they seemed
to be struggling against the Indian bowling attack. At one point the team was
at 55/7 where they needed to chase a total of 217. Deepti Sahrma and Shree
Charani took important wickets and maintained a pressure on Sri Lanka’s batting
lineup. Even Chamari Athapaththu, the captain of Sri Lanka team could not face
the Indian bowlers and after her wicket the chase became impossible.
Back-to-Back
Asian Games Gold for India
This victory
was important because the team has won a gold medal in Asian Games women’s
cricket for the second time in a row thus making them the champions who
defended their position. India won the last gold medal at Hangzhou in 2023 and
now defended it against Sri Lanka in 2026 by defeating them by 147 runs. India recently
won the Asia Cup against the same team and defeated them by 72 runs in those
